Nappy Changing
No child is excluded from participating in our setting who may, for any reason, not yet be toilet trained and who may still be wearing nappies.  We work with parents towards toilet training, unless there are medical or developmental reasons why this may not be appropriate. We have the necessary facilities and appropriate procedures in place to accommodate children who are not yet toilet trained. We see toilet training as a self-care skill that children have the opportunity to learn with the full support and non-judgemental concern of adults. Procedures Key persons are aware of all their children who are still in nappies and regularly check and change the children in their care. The changing area is warm, and has a safe area to lay down young children when they need changing. Each child is provided with their own drawstring bag, and parents are asked to provide nappies, wipes and spare clothes. Gloves and aprons are put on before changing starts and the areas are prepared.  All staff are familiar with the hygiene procedures and carries these out when changing nappies. In addition the key person will ensure that nappy changing times are relaxed. Staff members promote independence in young children, and encourage them to take an interest in using the toilet.  All children are encouraged to wash their own hands. Soap and paper towels are at child friendly height. Anti-bacterial hand wash or soap is not used on the children who attend Caterpillars. Key persons do not make inappropriate comments about a child’s genitals when changing their nappy. If children are left in soiled nappies/pull-ups in the setting this may constitute neglect and will be a disciplinary matter. We have a contract with Initial Services for a weekly collection and disposal of used nappies.
